GuestJanuary 16, 2022 at 4:52 amVery well dissected application of #metaverse between ibadah (reducing friction is not acceptable, but open to education and understanding ) and mumalat (reducing friction is encouraged)… concern with metaverse is the gap between the have and have nots (most of the 1.8B Muslims) will increase … furthermore, the pandemic has highlighted aptly the craving for human interactions, and the virtual world will create more issues, from bullying to stalking and the emotional/physiological challenges, esp for young people …

GuestJanuary 16, 2022 at 5:10 amWe as Muslims should be taking the initiative and embrace the idea of a virtual world of Islam, otherwise we’ll let others define it for us.
I’m glad people are discussing, even if there are debatable arguments. So, nice article! And I’m flattered to see you quoted parts of the statements I made in the WIRED piece 🙂 -

GuestJanuary 16, 2022 at 5:11 amIf the idea is to use it as a mechanism for educating about the history, culture and science of the Arabic speaking world through AR, digital signage and mobile-first experiences. That are used to promote historical and cultural sites through tourism ministries. I think is an idea worth persueing.
I believe it can work beautifully, as a community driven project between history departments in universities and museum curators. In fact it will bring life to the few old struggling schools of Arabic calligraphy in Cairo and the struggling art of Mother 9f Pearl craftsmen in Syria, and other masons alike.

GuestJanuary 16, 2022 at 5:13 amThe piece has been extremely well-written and conveys an unbiased view on the metaverse. My own personal opinion is to not involve facets of ibaadah or religious worship even for educational purposes as we never know when the thin boundary lines that exist are trespassed. A large percentage of the younger generation do not have the requisite knowledge to empower them with regards to Islam and such manifestations of using VR and AR to simulate pilgrimage and others kinds of worship can in future lead them to think that the obligations are discharged by doing these acts in the metaverse. Lifting of knowledge is not going to happen in a single day and these implementations like touching the Black Stone in the metaverse or simulating VR travel on Buraq are the beginning towards that end.
